2011… you trickster, you. I’ll admit, you had us going. Your failed frozen cycle and failed fresh cycle #2 were terribly discouraging. But then you went and surprised us with fresh cycle #3… all sneaky-like. PREGNANT! That, coupled with so much love and support from our favorite people, really turned it all around. And I have a feeling 2012 is going to be pretty darn special.

How Are You Feeling?

I’m typing with numb fingers. For the last several weeks, my hands have been asleep most of the time. Especially at night when my knuckles also start to ache so much that I can’t grip the blankets or pillow as I turn from side to side. The latest development is a zingy electric shock when I move my wrist a certain way — like bumping a funny bone in my hand. I have pregnancy-induced carpal tunnel (caused by swelling and fluid retention increasing pressure and compressing the median nerve). Did you know that was a thing? News to me! I’m waiting on a pair of comfort night splints that should be arriving in the mail in the next few days. Hoping for some relief.

BUT other than that, I’m feeling great. [Knock on wood.] The sciatic nerve pain that was an issue in late October/early November has subsided. The I-think-I’m-going-to-die heartburn (something I had never experienced before pregnancy) seems to be under control for now. And the cold of all colds that I snarfled and hacked my way through while on vacation has finally cleared up. Also, I failed my glucose screening at my 28 week appointment, but passed the follow-up glucose tolerance test which means NO gestational diabetes… phew.

This Friday marks 30 weeks. Wowza. That’s starting to get close, huh? My appointments are every two weeks now. I’m measuring right on track, but baby boy still seems to be hanging out head up / feet down from what my doctor can feel — which makes sense with the rolling I feel high in my belly and the kicks I feel down in my stretchy waistband. There’s still time for him to shift, but my doctor said if he hasn’t turned around by 32 weeks, we’ll have an ultrasound to start taking a look at what we’re dealing with.

A final rambling paragraph before I head to bed: A few days ago, our friends lent us their fetal doppler monitor so hubby and I were able to listen to his little heart beat at home. Awww. Also, I received the first issue of Parents magazine that I subscribed to through one of those discount sites that are all the rage now. Parents… that’s soon to be… us? I read it and then left it in hubby’s bathroom for reading material. I’m still slowly, but surely, making progress on my to-do list. I’ll have the gift registry wrapped up this weekend — ready for my four showers in January. So much love! Oh, and I finally ordered furniture and picked a color so hubby can get painting. Plenty more practical things still left to do though, like classes and a hospital tour and choosing a pediatrician and more. In the midst of busyness at work and the upcoming holidays, time is flying!

Two weeks ago, baby boy shifted and hubby was able to put his hand on my belly and feel his little kicks for the first time! Seems he has since gone back into hiding, but I can usually still feel his reassuring flutters a couple times a day. Last Friday, my mom joined me at my 24 week appointment where she heard his heart beat like a galloping horse.

We finally emptied out the nursery-to-be. I unpacked about half of the boxes, at which point I was exhausted and hubby hauled the rest of them upstairs where they will be far too easy to ignore. After somewhat extensive research (much more than I anticipated), I am nearly ready to place a furniture order. Hubby has asked about paint color, but I’m not sure I can make that commitment yet. Who knew every aspect of this room would seem so important?

We are going on vacation to Charleston and Savannah next week. Really looking forward to exploring the cities and spending some relaxing time together before baby boy arrives.

In observation of Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day

It’s been a while, but we’re back to say hello. We had our 20 week ultrasound today. Baby boy measured at 20w1d with a strong heart beat and all his bits and pieces. It felt so good to check in. Despite my growing belly and the occasional flutters and pokes that I started feeling at 16 weeks, it’s sometimes still hard to believe he’s there. But we saw wriggling, squirming proof. There really is a baby, and we’re half way to meeting him!

I guess hubby and I better get to work cleaning out the nursery-to-be that is still filled with a mess of partially unpacked boxes from our move. And maybe start trying to learn something about raising a baby… of which we currently know little to nothing. I’m sure we’re naturals ;)

Date Night

Hubby and I went on a date last night in celebration of the start of the second trimester (and because it felt like we had yet to formally celebrate the pregnancy since we were feeling a bit cautious in the early weeks). We perused the junk/treasures at Hunt & Gather, ordered a couple of pies at Pizzeria Lola, walked Lou around the Lake of the Isles, enjoyed our favorite flavors (Pavarotti and Oreo) on the patio of Sebastian Joe’s—where we cheersed our ice cream cups “to baby”, and then finished with a movie at home. It was lovely. And also kind of exhausting. But lovely!
