Running the Numbers

The embryologist called with our fertilization report this morning. Of the 14 eggs retrieved, 10 were ICSI‘ed and 9 fertilized. I think I am happy with this (even though it is half of what we had last time). I laid in bed this morning trying to decide what I would think was a good number. What number could the embryologist say to make me happy? I decided 10+ would be good. We came close.

I can’t help but compare numbers with cycle #1 — just to speculate (because that’s what we IVFers do best). If the percentages worked out exactly the same as last time…

… we would have 2 unaffected embryos to transfer. Which is all I am hoping for (as long as those same embryos also manage to be high quality). However, I’m going to keep pulling for at least one more because that 4 out of 14 last time surprised us — we were expecting closer to 50%. Anyway… here I am sorting through all of this even after I realized a long time ago that numbers and percentages often mean squat.

Next up: The embryos will be biopsied tomorrow and a cell from each will be couriered for PGD. Thursday we will receive an update from the embryologist on how many are continuing to divide and develop. And Friday, minutes before the transfer, we will find out the quality of each embryo and how many are unaffected by ALD.

Here’s to dividing and conquering!

I know it is a terrible cliche, but it is true that it only takes one. And you’ve got more than that. Best of luck.

Those projection numbers are exactly how I think too. Hard not to run the numbers when you have them. Your numbers look great – nine is a hell of a number. Best luck sitting tight the next few days while you wait for the results.

Thanks for celebrating w me today. It means a lot.
